La Canada’s Scoville Places 10th in State Finals

After winning Southern Section D4, Katherine Scoville traveled to Fresno to compete with the best D4 girls in California at the CIF State meet.  She dropped over a minute from her 2014 time to finish the Woodward Park 5K in 18:13 and placed 10th (compared to 24th at the 2014 meet).  She was the second finisher from Southern Section.  Congratulations on a fine season.  Visit PrepCalTrack for complete state meet coverage.

La Canada’s Scoville Qualifies For State Finals
Katherine Scoville wins Southern Section D4 by 21 seconds!

Katherine Scoville dropped 45 seconds off her course time from the mid-season Mt. SAC Invitational and won CIF-Southern Section D4 in 17:53 (an impressive 21 seconds over the second place runner and even more remarkable since it was faster than her time at Riverside in CIF Prelims and many runners were 20 or so seconds slower at SAC.)  She qualified for the CIF State meet as an individual.  Though each of the Spartans’ scorers improved significantly off their Invite times, it was not enough to allow the La Canada team to qualify as they placed 9th overall with 254 points and a team time of 1:40:00.  The entire Varsity squad is returning in 2016 and will have another shot at State.

South Pasadena’s girls team competed in D3.  Emily Ye led the Tigers with a 19:49 finish in 48th place, followed closely by Elizabeth Bock at 19:55 in 55th.  The team came in 13th in a tough division with a score of 342 points and a team time of 1:42:15.

Xavier Beck of San Marino ran as an individual in D4 Boys and came in 41st with a time of 16:47.

With 2 heats per division, 8 teams in each heat qualify for CIF Finals.  Individuals placing in the top 12 also qualify if their team is eliminated.

For the first time in decades, CIF-SS Prelims were held away from Mt. SAC.  The Riverside course did not receive great reviews from coaches and athletes, so it will be interesting to see if 2015 was a one-off.  The course is flat with minor grade changes, but the loose footing was a challenge.  In general, it looked like times for Rio Hondo athletes were about 20-30 seconds faster for guys and 10-20 seconds faster for girls compared to times the previous week at Lacy Park.  With a wider start than SAC, there were two heats in each division with the top 8 teams from each proceeding to CIF Finals.

Rio Hondo had two teams qualify for Finals -- South Pasadena girls in D3 and La Canada girls in D4.  Xavier Beck of San Marino qualified as an individual in D4 boys by placing 11th in his heat.
