Rio Hondo Meet 2 was held at the challenging Crescenta Valley Park course. South Pasadena won the JV Boys race in convincing fashion, with 17 points and 7 runners in the top 10. South Pasadena’s Colin Schwantner won the race by 15 seconds in 18:44. San Marino’s 65 points just edged La Canada’s 66 for 2nd place in the team competition.
Next up were the JV Girls, and South Pasadena again won the team competition with all five scorers in the top 10 -- this time with 18 points. Lady Tiger Maylis Whetsel won the race in 23:11, 15 seconds (coincidentally) over teammate Kate Lee. Temple City improved on its team performance from Rio Hondo Meet 1, placing four runners in the top 10 and scoring 37 points. La Canada took 3rd with 74 points.
In the Varsity Boys race, Kieran Press-Reynolds of South Pasadena followed his Rio Hondo Meet 1 win with a 15 second (Hmmmm, there’s a trend here) victory in 16:14 over Monrovia’s impressive sophomore Roberto Soto at 16:29. Tiger Oliver Chang was close behind in third at 16:32. South Pas won the team competition with 25 points. La Canada and San Marino tied with 71 points, with La Canada taking second place based on their 6th man finish.
In the Varsity Girls race, San Marino’s Olivia Ruiz grabbed 1st place in 19:47, just beating League 1 winner Adena Dipaolo of La Canada by 1 second. La Canada’s Sarah Arthur matched her League 1 finish in placing 3rd with a time of 20:03. La Canada again won the team competition, this time with 33 points. South Pasadena improved on its points total from League 1, finishing in second with 56 points, and San Marino was third with 70 points.
In the Frosh-Soph Boys race, Tiger Sam Clark repeated as winner, coming through in 17:46 and just edging teammate Nicolo Porcu by 1 second. Tiger Kai Dettman was third, not far behind with a 17:50 finish. South Pas completely dominated this race, winning with a perfect 15 points and placing eight runners in the top 10. Temple City was second with 56 points and La Canada third with 88.
