Rio Hondo League XC Finals were held at Lacy Park, with the Varsity squads competing for both League titles and spots in CIF competition. In the Varsity Boys race, South Pasadena’s Kai Dettman (16:29) edged out La Canada’s Owen Serricchio (16:32) and Blair’s Asa Barton (16:37) for the Rio Hondo individual crown. The race was marred by incorrect course directions provided to the pack coming back onto the inner loop during the first mile, but in the end the results seemed to follow the pattern set in the previous RHL meets. The remaining first team RHL varsity guys runners (in order) were Monrovia’s Roberto Soto (16:54), South Pasadena’s Nicolo Porcu (17:07) and Alekzander Grijalva-Moreno (17:07) and Monrovia’s Jeremy Donohue (17:15). The teams qualifying for CIF were South Pasadena (36 points), La Canada (67 points) and Temple City (82 Points). In addition, Blair’s Barton and Monrovia’s Soto qualified for CIF as individuals.
In the girls Varsity, La Canada’s Ellaney Matarese gutted out the win in 18:38 over Monrovia’s Alayna Peters (18:44). The remaining RHL first team varsity girls finishers were (in order) La Canada’s Sarah Auther (19:00), South Pasadena’s Sydney Morrow (19:16), Mai Koyama (19:37) and Elizabeth Bock (19:38), and San Marino’s Olivia Ruiz (19:38). The CIF qualifiers were South Pasadena (38 pts), La Canada (53 pts) and San Marino (64 pts). Monrovia’s Peters qualified for CIF as an individual.
As in the varsity races, South Pasadena won team titles in the JV Boys and JV Girls races, with scores of 28 points and 17 points, respectively. La Canada broke the Tigers’ stranglehold on team titles by taking the Frosh-Soph boys race with 28 points. Individual winners were Alexander Parra of South Pasadena (18:14) in the boys JV, Lindsay Michels of South Pasadena (21:10) in girls JV, and Tiger Brady Nakamura (17:58) in Frosh-Soph boys.
