CIF-State Championships

South Pasadena’s Tianhao Wei travelled to the CIF State Championships for the second consecutive year and had a personal best 48’ 0.25” effort in the Triple Jump to place 3rd overall.  He moved up from fifth place last year.  Looking forward to seeing what he accomplishes in his senior season in 2020.

CIF-Southern Section Masters
May 18, 2019 @ El Camino College Stadium

The Masters meet brings together the top athletes from all four Southern Section divisions to compete for slots at the CIF State meet.  In the Triple Jump, South Pasadena’s Tianhao Wei qualified for the state meet with a 46’ 4.5” effort (good for 5th place overall - he passed on his last 2 attempts).  South Pasadena’s Kai Dettman ran a 1:56.10 in the 800 meter run, several seconds off his personal best from the prior week.  Monrovia had two athletes in the girls 300 meter hurdles -- senior Inaya Jumal had a personal best 44.56 second effort and placed 7th; and freshman standout Madeleine Conte placed 9th in a time of 46.63.  Rio Hondo had two athletes in the boys Pole Vault -- junior Lucas Talin of South Pasadena had a personal best 14’ 9” vault to place 8th, and junior David Miketta of La Canada placed 11th with a 14’ 3” effort.

CIF-Southern Section Finals
May 11, 2019 @ El Camino College Stadium

El Camino College played host to the CIF-SS division finals, and Rio Hondo League had athletes from four schools competing in the D-3 championship.  Starting with the girls:  Gianna Beasley of South Pasadena and Ellaney Matarese of La Canada repeated their 2, 3 finish from 2018 in the 800M run with times of 2:15.35 and 2:15.44, respectively; La Canada’s Sarah Auther placed 8th in the 3200M with a time of 11:32.92; Monrovia’s Delaysia Allen and Inaya Jumal placed 4th and 5th in the 100 Meter Hurdles, with times of 15.18 and 15.24, respectively (Jumal’s time was a personal best); Inaya Jumal came back in the 300 Meter Hurdles to take the championship crown with a time of 44.81 seconds, and her teammate Madeleine Conte was a close second in 45.32.  Allen also doubled in the 300 and placed 8th in 49.05.  In the 4x400M relay, South Pas team of Jade Harris, Ashley Hugasian, Christina Taylor and Beasley placed 6th with a 4:03.43 effort.  Monrovia’s Rameim Gadala placed 8th in the high jump at 4’ 8”.  Avery Page of San Marino was 5th in the pole vault with a 9’ 6” vault. South Pasadena’s Ashley Hugasian and Sophia Yamashita placed 6th and 8th in the triple jump, with leaps of 35’ 4.25” and 33’ 4.5”, respectively.

In the boys competition, South Pas’ Tianhao Wei took 3rd in the Triple Jump with a 45’ 0” leap; Wei also took 2nd in the long jump with a 21’ 4.5” effort; in the 400M Monrovia’s Keeshonne Robinson took 4th with a personal best 49.08; Tiger Kai Dettman took the D3 championship crown in the 800M with a personal best time of 1:53.49, and Monrovia’s Roberto Soto also PR’d with a time of 1:58.42 (7th); and Jasiri Jumal of Monrovia placed 5th in the 110M hurdles (15.60).  South Pasadena’s relay squad of Terrel and Ferrel Mansano, Ivan Estrada, and Dettman took 4th with a time of 3:24.55 in the 4x400M.  In the pole vault, La Canada’s David Miketta took the D-3 championship with a 15’ 0” vault, and South Pasadena’s Lucas Talin was close behind in second with a 14’ 6” vault.

May 4, 2019 @ D-2 Moorpark HS, D-3 Estancia HS, D-4 Carpinteria HS

Rio Hondo CIF-Southern Section Prelims qualifiers competed in three CIF Prelims meets on May 4.  Temple City was at D-2 competition in Moorpark; La Canada, Monrovia, San Marino and South Pasadena were at the D-3 meet at Estancia HS in Costa Mesa, and Blair was at Carpinteria High School for the D-4 competition.  Seventeen individuals and two relay teams  qualified to compete in CIF-SS Finals at El Camino College on May 11 (all are from Division 3 schools): In the boys 400 meters, Monrovia’s Keeshonne Robinson (5th, 50.13) qualified; two athletes qualified in the 800M, South Pasadena’s Kai Dettman (1st, 1:57.60) and Monrovia’s Roberto Soto (8th, 1:59.80); and in the 110 meter hurdles Monrovia’s Jasiri Jumal qualified (5th, 15.08).  South Pasadena qualified in the 4x400M relay, as the team of Mansano, Mansano, Estrada and Dettman ran a 3:35.98 for 5th.  South Pasadena’s Tianhao Wei qualified in both the Long Jump (3rd, 21’ 6”) and in the Triple Jump, (2nd, 45’ 0”).  In the pole vault, both Lucas Talin of South Pasadena (1st, 13’ 0”) and David Miketta of La Canada (7th, 13’ 00”) qualified

In the girls competition, two qualified in the 800M -- La Canada’s Ellaney Matarese (3rd, 2:17.32) and South Pas’ Gianna Beasley (6th, 2:18.58); Spartan Sarah Auther qualified in the 3200M by placing 6th overall in 11:14.76; Monrovia’s Delaysia Allen (4th, 15.27) and Inaya Jumal (9th, 15.71) qualified in the 100M hurdles (3rd, 14.65); and Monrovia placed three athletes in the 300M hurdles finals: Inaya Jumal (1st, 45.28), Madeleine Conte (6th, 46.04), and Delaysia Allen (9th, 47.78).  South Pasadena qualified in the 4x400 relay -  (Segal, Beasley, Hugasian, Taylor - 9th, 4:07.41).  Monrovia’s Raneim Gadala qualified in the high jump (7th, 4’ 11”); San Marino’s Avery Page vaulted into the pole vault finals with a 10’ 0” personal best; and South Pasadena’s Ashley Hugasian (5th, 35’ 11”) and Sophia Yamashita (9th, 34’ 9.25”) also qualified in the Triple Jump.
