The first Rio Hondo League meet of the 2014 Cross Country season was held on Thursday, September 25 at Lacy Park. Temperatures were in the high 80s and the grass was thick.
In the Varsity Men’s race, San Marino won the team event with 32 points (all five scoring runners in the top 10) to South Pasadena’s 47 and La Canada’s 50. The race was won by South Pasadena’s Cullen Irvine in a time of 16:34. The Titans were led by John Judge (2nd, 16:41) who worked his way through the pack in miles 2 and 3. La Canada’s Ethan Angold (3rd, 16:41) and Ethan Crane (4th, 17:07) made it easy on Spartan fans who just had to cheer for “Ethan” throughout the race.
In the Varsity Girl’s race, La Canada captured the team win with a score of 33 points, edging out South Pasadena with 37. La Canada benefited from the strong performances of Katie Scoville (1st, 19:33), Colleen Mispagel (3rd, 19:41) and Kallie Rushing (5th, 20:21), and had all 5 scoring runners in the top 13. South Pasadena was led by Emily Yee (4th, 20:13) and also had a strong pack in the 7-8 positions. Third place San Marino, with 56 points, was led by Sarah Linton (2nd, 19:35).
South Pasadena showed its depth in winning the remaining three races, taking the JV Boys race with 26 points, the JV Girls with 25 points, and the Frosh-Soph Boys race with 23 points. In the JV Boys race, La Canada’s Matthew Tadgett broke up a South Pas sweep by taking 1st in 18:59 with three Tigers close behind in the 2-4 spots. South Pasadena’s Briana Nunez won the Girls JV race in 21:43 after battling with La Canada’s Jenny Callan (2nd, 21:57) and Caitlin Mispagel (3rd, 22:16) throughout the race. The Frosh-Soph Boy’s race was the closest of the day, with South Pasadena’s Armando Sibrian out-kicking La Canada’s David Sarkisian down the stretch and both having a time of 19:07. Temple City’s Grant Han was close behind in 3rd with 19:09.
