CIF Finals - November 19
Five of the six Rio Hondo teams qualified for CIF Finals against the best teams in Southern Section, with La Canada’s Girls and Boys and San Marino’s Girls competing in D4 and South Pasadena’s Girls and Boys competing in D3. La Canada’s Girls were closest to qualifying for CIF State competition, placing 8th (the top 7 teams progress to Woodward Park for State) even though they improved their team time by over 4 minutes compared to Prelims, finishing in 1:34:52 with 270 points. Adena Dipaolo led the Lady Spartans with a 20th place finish in 18:16, and was followed closely by teammate Sara Arthur in 21st at 18:21 (both improved their times significantly from Prelims). Katie Scoville, returning from season-long injury, placed 50th in 18:54 -- a healthy Scoville likely would have made the difference in the Spartans qualifying for State. San Marino’s girls improved their team time by over three minutes, to 1:42:38, but came in 22nd with 545 points. The top Titan finisher was Olivia Ruiz in 27th. The La Canada boys placed 21st with a team time of 1:25:04 (an over 2 minute improvement from Prelims) and 581 points in D4. Ryan Van Slooten was again the leading Spartan, finishing in 65th place in a time of 16:15.
South Pasadena’s Boys placed 14th in D3 with 396 points and a 1:20:50 team time (10 seconds slower than Prelims). Oliver Chang was again the top Tiger finisher in 15:30 (29th), followed closely by Kieran Press-Reynolds at 15:36 in 40th place. The Lady Tigers competed in the last race of the meet and came in 22nd with 545 points and a team time of 1:41:51, disappointingly almost two minutes slower than Prelims. Lindsey Calva was the top finisher in 68th with a time of 19:27, a nice improvement over her Prelims time.
CIF Prelims - November 11 and 12
La Canada and San Marino’s Girls and Boys got seeded in the same D4 Prelims heats on Veterans Day. In the Girls race, both teams qualified for CIF Finals with La Canada placing 4th in a team time of 1:39:38 and 143 points, and San Marino placing 11th in a team time of 1:45:58 and 320 points. As they had done all season, La Canada’s Adena Dipaolo and San Marino’s Olivia Ruiz ran together throughout the race, and Ruiz was the top Rio Hondo finisher in a time of 19:00 for 6th place (Dipaolo was close behind at 19:06 in 9th). In the Boys race, La Canada just made it into Finals by placing 12th in a team time of 1:27.44 and 316 points. San Marino missed qualifying, placing 14th with a team time of 1:29:37 and 383 points. The top Rio Hondo finisher was Ryan Van Slooten of La Canada in 16:46, good for 25th place.
South Pasadena’s Boys and Girls competed the following day in D3 competition, with both teams progressing to Finals. The boys came in 6th place with a team time of 1:20:40 and 209 points. Oliver Chang led the Tigers with an impressive 15:24 time and 7th place finish, followed by Kieran Press-Reynolds in 14th at 15:42. The lady Tigers came in 8th place in a team time of 1:39:50 and 230 points. Baily Wu was the top finisher in 36th place with a time of 19:35. Lindsey Calva (39th), Elizabeth Bock (41st) and Maddy Engelsman (46th), finished within 30 seconds of Wu for a nice packing in 1-4 scorers.
